Okay so, Hi. I’m returning after a bit of an (involuntary) break from our newsletter. This past month has been tough, like the holidays can be when you’re born into a family like mine (ie. very dysfunctional). BUT! This always remind me what can happen if you stop working on yourself and start giving into your less attractive traits. So I’m back this new year with renewed motivation to get over some of the bad anxieties I’ve had since I was a kid, one of them being…dogs!

I like dogs a lot, that was never the problem. I was just never allowed to have one long enough before it was taken away from me because of some lame excuse. Then I realized. I’m 35. No one can take a dog away from me anymore.

Cut to:

Baby Ash is a 4-month old Border Collie Australian Shepherd mix and he’s the sweetest tornado you’ll meet. Look at his little eyes!

I’ll take him running with me when he’s old enough, and I’d love to hear some advice in the comment if any of you run with your pet! I’m ecstatic. I have a puppy. I still can’t believe it :)

This month was not all puppy cuddles, though. I did work. I wrapped up Love Everlasting #10 over Christmas and have already jumped on #11. It’s been a little while since I shared some pencils, so here are some of my favorites from #8, which we will release next Wednesday.

Original Art Drop coming up

I’ll be doing an original art drop next week, on Tuesday, January 24th at 8am PST. The inks for the first five issues of Love Everlasting will be available, PLUS, pencils like the ones above. These are 8’ by 12’, more affordable than full format inks. I think it could be a great way to make original art available to more people plus you get to see my notes and screw ups :)

By then my store will have moved, on my new website. Keep your eyes peeled for an email with the link to the art!

I had Cliff Chiang over on YouTube last night for a live interview and we had a great time. As a creator anxious but also terrified to start writing my own stuff, I poked him about the challenges of his Catwoman work. It was enlightening and frankly elevated some of my fears.

At this point, it’s almost become a signature of the Mini-Print Club. For this Mini-Print, we’ll play on light bouncing off the crystals and apply varnish on the lighter tones. This should define shapes and depth beautifully!

I already have sketchbooks. About five unfinished sketchbooks. I buy them, draw in them for a couple of days and then forget all about that new habit of mine. Then why buy new ones rather than pick up the unfinished ones?

I can’t do it. An unfinished sketchbook is tainted. My failure of keeping up with sketching is written all over them and they reek of defeat. The only reason I don’t throw them away is that these were once trees and to me it’s akin to throwing away meat. They gave their lives for this sketchbook. So I keep them.

Anyway, I got a dollar sketchbook because at least I’m not throwing another 20€ at what is sure to be a repeat of all the past non-starters.

And…it worked? I’m cautiously optimistic, but it’s the longest I’ve been keeping up with it, so, fingers crossed. Below, are excerpts from the past few weeks of night sketching sessions.

And below that, are the sketches I’m doing for the ROOM SERVICE Kickstarter I mentioned the other day (which I’m drawing live on Instagram every day). We’re less than 10k shy of 100,000€ and we’re trying to get there as fast as possible to unlock our very cool stretch goal. Daily Horror Sketches on Kickstarter

Everyday of this week at 1pm PST (and maybe until the end of the ROOM SERVICE Kickstarter if it goes well!), I’ll make one spread available to a backer. Yesterday’s was Carrie and it went out in a flash. They’re not super expensive, and they are truly unique. These are composition studies I do for myself, for fun :)

Well, there’s only one a day, and a lot of you, BUT, everyone gets a fair shot.

They are made available as add-ons at 1pm PST. This means you'll only find them at the add-on stage, after you've selected your pledge, and not on the main page tiers.

At 12, PK directed me in our school theater play. Even then, I remember it clear as day, while we were all running around the community center ecstatic we got to skip gym class, he was there to do a job. A tween, but driven and with a vision. We then lost touch for a few years until our love for anything creative brought us back together as 16-years olds, when he cast me in one of his short movies.

We were determined kids with a plan. He was going to grow up to be a director, and I was to become an actor.

Instead, life provided us with opportunities and we welcomed them. I became an artist and he a comicbook writer. A pretty damn good one at that. I should know, I was lucky enough to put his wonderful characters into pictures for years.

But I don’t think cinema ever left him. It was this dormant passion that was just waiting for the right time to take a front seat again and that day was back in 2021 when he told me “I don’t know how to do this as a 34-year old writer, but I need to go back to directing”. 

How do you do this, then? 

1- you partner up with the best, hottest horror comic writer you know: James Tynion IV. Well, first you email him with the thought, you anxiously wait for an answer and when he does less than an hour later not only with a big yes but also with a fully fleshed idea, you say Holy Shit this is happening. 

2- you receive the most brilliant script, develop the tone….. imbue it with your love for Korean cinema and anything independent, you develop your vision for it and don’t stop until you feel you have something truly worthy of a viewer’s time.

3- you draw the full storyboards.

4- you surround yourself with the best creators to help bring this project to life: Tonci Zonjic, Martin Simmonds, Emma Price, Francesco Francavilla, Rafael Albuquerque, Jim Mahfood, Cliff Chiang…

5- you put together a huge set of perks that will make your fans go nuts with enthusiasm: posters, prints, a movie artbook, a prose story with spot illustrations, original art, the full storyboards, creator lives…

6- you launch your horror short movie, ROOM SERVICE on Kickstarter and keep your fingers crossed.

WHAT IS ROOM SERVICE ABOUT?

ROOM SERVICE opens the door into a hidden world that caters exclusively to the ultra-rich, and provides them experiences that only their money can buy. It is the story of a man, down on his luck, who agrees to participate in a grisly transaction in that world, and what happens to him when he decides he wants to back out.
