BEHIND THE LOVE: Nonsensical pencils
Don't trust people who say they've got their shit together
When I started out, my thumbnails, pencils and inks were all done on paper. First of all, I didn’t know any other way, and second of all, I had no money for a Cintiq. A couple of years went by, I was making enough money to indulge in digital toys and at that time the discourse was very much in favor of moving to digital. You could address editor notes much easier, the drawing process itself was quicker and you had all those 3D, perspective models to help you out. I was more concerned at that time by the fantasy of having a day-off than by the potential loss of original art revenue so I quit paper, notebooks and bristol boards entirely. I figured I could just go back if I ever got tired of the stylus. Like riding a bike, right?
Turns out, not really.
