It’s been a while since I’ve shown anything from my sketchbook so I’ll do a little tour, today.
I’m very inconsistent in my sketching practice-some artists will pencil in art everyday, ideas, thoughts for future project, but that’s never been me. I never sketch anything from imagination, weird, isn’t it? I think I just really like to interpret story, and I’m so used to working from a script that it’s where my mind is the most active.
So what do I draw in my sketchbook? Well, usually, it’s about figuring out shapes that are not so clear in my head, or, grow the library of objects, clothes, faces, that I might eventually use in my pages at some point. Example: I just draw a whole bunch of scenes including trees and I felt I could have done a better job at tree variety. Like, be more specific. Of course, my style is cartoony, so it’ll always need to be simplified. I’m not about to draw every leave of every goddamn tree in the frame, but still, I wanted to gather some references and think about shapes.
For trees and flowers, of which there are quite a few in Love Everlasting, I usually dig into my massive Garden Plants and Flowers Encyclopedia. An old person dream book. I shouldn’t say that, flowers are cool as shit. Anyway, here’s some from Saturday’s sessions.
Another thing I LOVE doing is sketching from shows and right now Mrs Maisel is my absolute favorite for obvious reason. The production and costume designs are charismatic, inventive and wonderful for inspiration. I look for interesting details in furniture, house items, home architecture, rugs, gesture, anything that catches my eye. I also spend quite some time on folds. Big billowing dress are not the easiest to draw and early-seasons-Midge has got an actual room full choke-full of em.
That concludes our tour! I feel like keeping up with this for a little while during my evenings so I will have some more pages to show soon!
Much love,
Elsa
Oh man, a Midge comic drawn by Elsa would be so damn good.
Neat. Love plants / comedys
