The Cwaziest Scwipt: Batman and Elmer Fudd
I can't believe this happened.
We were at New York Comic Con, at a DC Party, and Dan Didio, the publisher smiled to a crowd of writers and said, our next project would be DC meets Loony Tunes. I said, oh that would be funny, DC Characters in a Loony Tune world, like when Batman went on Scooby Doo. And he said, no, Loony Tunes character in a DC world. I thought this was a joke and immediately cocked a fake a shotgun turned to James Tynion and said, “Wabbit season? No, Batseason!”
Somehow that became a comic: Batman Elmer Fudd Special. That sold out. That we won awards for. That I still sign to this day and people still tell me is maybe the best issue I ever wrote. The comic world is a crazy place and if you put your passion behind any character, any character can reward you with a great story.
But all the credit for the success of this book goes to Lee Weeks who treated this material with such respect and beauty. It was my first time working with Lee, and I literally called him halfway through and told him that this was just a lark, he didn’t have to make the Mona Lisa with every page. I didn’t know then that Lee has only one gear, it’s all Mona Lisas all the way down.
What a joy it is to work with that man. Got to do it again someday soon. The page where Batman and Fudd silently fight is certainly the best fight scene I’ve ever had in a comic of mine. And, as you’ll see, it’s all in the art, not the script.
All right, enough wambling. Here for the first time is the script for Batman Elmer Fudd Special #1.
