Mutts are the best doggos and don't come with pure bred issues. Keep in mind, having a dog is basically like having a child. They aren't really low maintenance like a cat.
Maybe the pure breds are more high maintenance, ours was a mutt of some kind, but distinctly had all the coloration of a shepherd. I didn't find her high maintenance, moreso involved in our lives. An active participant :) If left alone in the house for the majority of a day she would do something naughty like dig in the trash, but that anxiety wouldn't have been present if we were working from home, or if we took her with us. Like Kim said, more like a child than a cat, you have to consider taking them with you or getting a sitter if you're not gonna be around.
doggo rec: maybe a greyhound. admittedly they are not small but are very chill, and very lazy (they sleep a majority of the day) need only a little bit of walking and activity. they are also extremely gentle and so far in three years mine has not broken a thing in my apartment when playing.
As for doggos, I always suggest bringing info to a shelter and they’ll help you identify the right dog for you. And, a good read related to dogs is The Dog Merchant, which is a fascinating look at the dog industry.
rescue a dog form a shelter! find one that bonds with you. they will be your furever friend.

I know! But you're right, it's always worth repeating. I've been thinking about it for a long time, and still weighing all my options.
Australian shepherd. Very smart and kind medium sized doggo. Best I've ever had.
I thought Australian shepherds were super high-maintenance!

Dog recommendation: whippet. They are high energy for just a few minutes a day. Perfect size and temperament. Email me if you want more details.

I'll look into greyhounds, thanks!

Thanks for the info, David!
