(Just to mention: "y'all" is a colloquialism associated only with the Southern states of the U.S. Many other English speakers unfortunately associate political/racial/religious perspectives with this mode of speech. Which is too bad because there is a warmth to it. And a functionality in that the phrase "all y'all" accomplishes addressing a general plurality in a manner no other English phrase can. But in these times one might not want to be associated with a phrase that is so "volkisch" .)
Interesting Gide, I've never really thought of how "Y'all" can have that connotation and association! But in my experience y'all has been used as an all inclusive term instead of "you guys". So in a way it's made quite a progressive leap into many spaces including many non-profit organizations and campuses. And I'm glad, because as you mentioned, it does have a great function in addressing and does have a warmth to it! I use it for that reason!
